For Families
For Families - Introduction
When a family experiences the death of an important member, life changes forever. In the beginning, shock and numbness often serve as insulation from the painful reality of the loss. There may also be support from other family members and friends that helps distract from the ways in which the everyday life of the family is now different - the empty seat at the dinner table or the silence in the kitchen.
As the days and months go by, however, the reality becomes clearer just as that external support begins to fade. The questions and challenges may seem endless: What do I tell the youngest children... and how? Why does everyone seem to react so differently? What do I do when what works for me makes things harder for my children? Why do people ask us such insensitive questions? How do we heal as a family?
The GOALs Center for Families uses a psycho-educational support model as our primary method of providing services. This means that we take complicated mental health concepts and explain them in simple ways that even children can understand. This increases the likelihood that participants will retain and use the concepts and strategies learned. We offer a variety of counseling support services to families with children who are experiencing grief from the death of a parent(s). For more information about our services available please contact Kevin Duffy at (973) 800-9661 or via email at kevin@GOALsCenter.org.
