The uniqueness of the GOALs Center's approach to grief and loss was crafted in response to the challenge of helping families reorganize after the death of an important member. Because both the individual and systemic disorganization occasioned by grief can be overwhelming and consuming, family members can benefit from support that addresses not only the tasks of grief but also the resiliency required to manage their changed lives.

For Mental Health Providers

The GOALs model incorporates psycho-educational and supportive elements that reflect the evidence based tasks of grief resolution with creative activities (often based in metaphor) into a multi-family group protocol with a structured curriculum. Each group is facilitated by a licensed mental health clinician assisted by volunteer staff to insure the consistency and quality of services provided to group members.

Our philosophy of healing after loss is directed by our belief in the resilience of the human spirit. From our inception after September 11th, 2001 through our programming today, we continue to be humbled by the strength and courage of the families we have served. We recognize and incorporate the strength, resiliency and importance of community connection into our programs, trainings and publications. The motto that inspired us after September 11th will continue to direct our work in the future: "It is in the shelter of each other that we live."
